Genoscape's Philosophy on "Water in the Landscape"

Landscaping with water and stone presents a wealth of design opportunities. A tranquil pond, a cascading waterfall, a meandering stream, or a bubbling fountain - each of these possibilities offers aesthetic and environmental rewards. The concept of the garden as a peaceful, private sanctuary has inspired new interest in water gardens, although the pleasing accents have been incorporated into home landscapes for centuries.

Toronto WaterfallAs a Pond Contractor and Toronto Landscaping Company, Genoscape's design approach is to incorporate the relaxing properties of water into a new or existing landscape so that it becomes a seamless component of the landscape surround, complementing the desired lifestyle, the Water Garden Lifestyle. Over a decade of utilizing high quality components and natural materials, such as indigenous boulders, driftwood and aquatic planting to re-create natural looking water features has become our signature and brought us to the top of the water gardening industry for Toronto and the GTA as well as participating in some key projects across North America.  A water garden provides a way to transform your property into an environmentally friendly landscape full of colour and biodiversity, imitating a natural setting. We invite you to tour through the following pages of varying water gardens and explore the low maintenance, holistic properties that a water garden can add to your home.

Types of Water Features

Markham Ecosystem PondEcosystem Ponds & Waterfalls:  Our water features are very low maintenance because we work with Mother Nature, and not against her. We never advocate using any kind of chemical in your pond.  The components of our ponds are mechanical filtration, biological filtration, proper circulation, plants, fish, rocks and bacteria.  If any of these components are missing, the ecosystem will fail.
We have become very
efficient at installing these ponds.  We can easily install an 8' X 11' pond with a 5' stream in one day and an 11' X 16' pond with 5' stream in 1-1.5 days!

Markham PondlessPondless Waterfalls:  This water feature provides all the same benefits that a waterfall cascading into a pond offers but provides our customers with a lower maintenance option.   There are no open bodies of water as the reservoir is underground so it is an inherently suitable water feature for young children to interact with.  Pondless waterfalls usually cost less than ponds because there is often less rock and labour required.  They also give our customers an added savings on electricity costs and because you’re not dealing with an established ecosystem, it’s not necessary to run the pump 24/7.

Markham BubblerDecorative Water Features: These water features capture the majesty of flowing water and richly hued natural stone in a strikingly styled selection of garden-themed water features. Ornate water features serve as a focal point and in landscape design, focal points can make or break a project, so a decorative water feature is money well spent. Decorative water features are almost always the most affordable option. They can be installed in as little as 4 hours making them a great surprise gift!

The Pondless Waterfall and the Decorative Water Feature can be used in conjunction with the RainXChange, our rainwater harvesting system.  Please read below for more information.

Toronto Large WaterfallLarge Scale Water Features: The staff at Genoscape has the experience and the equipment necessary to implement large scale water features, such as massive waterfalls built from natural stone boulders into large ponds. This type of project requires skilled machine operators and an extensive knowledge of water feature implementation, which Genoscape has an abundance of.

Large scale water features are best suited for estate properties and commercial applications.  It is important to keep your water feature within the scale of it's surroundings or it fails to look natural.

Markham pool Waterfall 1 Pool Waterfalls: Would you like to incorporate a beautiful natural stone waterfall into a new or existing pool? Genoscape can help with that. We’ve done several unique projects that have turned the average swimming pool into a thing of natural beauty. With experience in both pool and waterfall construction, you can feel confident knowing that your investment in leisure will be a sound investment!

Environmental Services:

Rain Water Harvesting: Rain water harvesting is not a new approach to sustainable living but we at Genoscape plan to bring it to the forefront again by offering unique, modular designs that will work with any space.

                                                     The RainXChange System

RainXchange

The  RainXchange System is a revolutionary design that combines a recirculating decorative water feature with a sub-surface rainwater harvest storage system. Traditional methods of harvesting rainwater do not add beauty to your home or office setting.

Advantages of the RainXchange System vs. Traditional Rainwater Harvesting Methods

Aesthetic Benefits-  The RainXchange adds the beauty of a water feature to an efficient system for capturing, filtering, and reusing our most precious resource – water! Whether you choose a Pondless Waterfall or bubbling urn to your landscape, you’ll be happy knowing your RainXchange System not only looks great, but is beneficial for the environment, too.

Wildlife Habitat-  Because the water stored in the RainXchange System is constantly moving and being aerated, it becomes a sanctuary for wildlife. Birds, frogs, dragonflies and butterflies all flock to water in the landscape.  In fact, water is a key component in certified wildlife habitats.

Environmental Conservation-  Capturing rainwater to operate a decorative water feature creates true self-sustainability, drastically reducing the need for chemically-treated traditional water sources.

Ease of Use-  While you enjoy the benefits of a decorative water feature, the RainXchange System filters the stored water to prevent stagnation and growth of unhealthy bacteria. Accessing the stored underground water is easy as connecting a hose to a spigot.  A small pump is connected to the stored water making it convenient for you to water the landscape.

We have installed many RainXChange systems around Toronto and GTA and we are proud to have this as part of our reperitoire.  The product gives our customers something they can do to enhance the environment while also being able to enjoy a beautiful water feature, all for one price.

Permeable PaversPermeable Surfaces: The use of permeable pavers helps preserve our environment by reducing the amount of storm water runoff entering our natural waterways and aquifers. The water is allowed to naturally drain into the surface through the voids in the permeable pavers reducing the amount of contaminants and pollutants that would normally be discharged into the groundwater with non-permeable surfaces.

We have constructed permeable surfaces over parking lots, patios, walkways and driveways.  We are able to combine the RainXchange system with any permeable surface and harvest the water for use at a later time.

Constructed WetlandConstructed Wetlands:  Constructed wetlands are man-made wetlands built to remove various types of pollutants present in wastewater that flows through these systems. They are constructed to recreate the structure and function of natural wetlands. They possess a rich microbial community to effect the biochemical transformation of pollutants, they are biologically productive, and most important, they are self-sustaining.

We use wetlands as a filter for many different applications from small ponds to lake management.  We can easily add a wetland filter to any existing body of water.  The constructed wetlands can also feed a waterfall, which is an ideal application for golf course pond management and storm retention ponds.
